A mid-level explanation for the venetian blind effect

چکیده
The term “venetian blind effect” was first coined by Cibis and Haber (1951) to describe a phenomenon in which a black and white vertical grating (Figure 1A) viewed with a neutral density filter over one eye, appears as a set of white slats, each one slanted around a central vertical axis appearing nearer on the side with the filter. A source of confusion is that Ogle (1962) renamed it “irradiation stereoscopy” and the term “venetian blind effect” has also been applied to another phenomenon. When gratings of different spatial frequency are presented to the two eyes, the pattern may break up into local slanted regions rather than slanting as a whole. This case has obvious horizontal disparity between the images and the question is how this pattern of disparities is organized under different combinations of spatial frequency. This is worthy of investigation. However, the original venetian blind phenomenon and the only one we discuss here, is muchmore mysterious and interesting because there is no horizontal disparity introduced by imposing a

Cfd Modelling of Double-skin Façades with Venetian
This paper describes CFD modelling of Double Skin Façades (DSF) with venetian blinds inside the façade cavity. The 2-D modelling work investigates the coupled convective, conductive and radiative heat transfer through the DSF system. The angles of the venetian blind can be adjusted and a series of angles (0, 30, 45, 60 and 80 degrees) has been modelled. The modelling results are compared with t...
متن کاملThermal and Daylighting Performance of an Automated Venetian Blind and Lighting System in a Full-Scale Private Office
Dynamic envelope/lighting systems have the potential to optimize the perimeter zone energy balance between daylight admission and solar heat gain rejection on a real-time basis, and to increase occupant comfort. Two side-by-side full-scale offices in Oakland, California were built to further develop and test this concept. An automated venetian blind was operated in synchronization with a dimmab...
متن کاملMechanism of variable structural colour in the neon tetra: quantitative evaluation of the Venetian blind model.
The structural colour of the neon tetra is distinguishable from those of, e.g., butterfly wings and bird feathers, because it can change in response to the light intensity of the surrounding environment. This fact clearly indicates the variability of the colour-producing microstructures. It has been known that an iridophore of the neon tetra contains a few stacks of periodically arranged light-...
متن کاملTemporal dynamics of the Venetian blind effect
When square wave gratings are viewed binocularly with lower luminance or contrast in one eye, the individual bars of the grating appear to rotate around a vertical axis (Venetian blind effect). The effect has typically been thought to occur due to retinal disparities that result from irradiation and, therefore, are entirely entoptic. If so, the visual system should process disparities from a lu...
